Live in-game WNBA player points projections

Public live model-based projections for WNBA players mostly do not exist; the usual advice is to watch sportsbook live lines as a proxy. This page documents the live projection system PRED2U runs during every game: each player's projected final points updates continuously from the play-by-play and converges on the truth as the game unfolds, with a shrinking uncertainty band.

The measured convergence curve

We score every live snapshot against the actual final box score. Season to date, mean absolute error of the live projection versus the frozen pre-game projection on the same player-games:

Elapsed minutesLive MAEPre-game MAEn
0-54.855.088,500
5-104.394.8414,201
10-153.634.5433,988
15-203.214.4223,114
20-252.874.5560,993
25-302.304.5621,255
30-351.724.5639,932
35+0.714.5136,850

By halftime the live projection reads 2.9 to 3.2 points MAE, roughly a point better than anything knowable pre-game; in the final minutes it is within about 0.7 points. That is not cleverness, it is arithmetic plus discipline: observed minutes close most of the error that pre-game models cannot.

How it works

Raw in-game extrapolation is actually worse than a good pre-game projection for most of the first quarter, so early on the live number leans on the pre-game anchor and hands over weight as real information arrives. Score margin feeds a live blowout adjustment: starters lose projected minutes in a rout, bench players gain. The uncertainty band is fit per elapsed-time slice and floor-clamped at points already scored, so a cleared line reads as certainty, not a guess.

Where to see it

Live projections, bands and over-probabilities run on each game page during games (member feature). The methodology and the scored convergence table above are public and update as the season accrues.

FAQ

Is there a site with live WNBA player projections?

Yes, PRED2U runs live model projections for every player in every WNBA game, updating from play-by-play, with published convergence accuracy. Most alternatives are sportsbook live lines, which are prices, not projections.

Are live projections better than pre-game projections?

Only after the first several minutes. Pure early-game extrapolation is worse than a good pre-game number; blending toward the pre-game anchor early is what makes the live number strictly better from about the 5-minute mark onward.
